It sounds like the seller wants it both ways - you pay for the pieces, but he doesn't have to go through the work of actually parting it out and storing it while finding individual buyers.
I think that is a rather accurate analysis.
When my O-235 engine needed an overhaul in 2007 and I got a replacement engine from Jim Hillabrand, a club member offered to buy my old engine. I did some research and at that time a run-out engine was going from $2500 (history unknown) to $3500 (low total time). I sold mine to the club member for $2000.
