I just received a registered letter from the State of New Jersey (yes they can write). They are requesting all kinds of forms and the reason I have not paid State Sales Tax on the c150 I purchased.
Folks around here say "Don't pay. It is a one time purchase of personnal property".
Has anyone had any experience with this?
Chris,
I bought my 150 in Texas. When I brought it into Illinois, I had to pay 6% of the purchase price to base it IL. It is possible that had I not registered the plane in IL, the state would not have known that I had it. It wasn't worth it. If I'd gotten "ramp checked" by the IL DOT I would have been hit with the 6%, plus late penalty, plus penalty for not registering it. Since pilots get NOTHING from the state in terms of services and airports don't get state money either, it's just a revenue generating scheme for IL, but you can't get around it. Some folks base their planes in WI, but the closest WI airport to me is about 45 minutes away on a good day.
