Jim,

VERY nice looking plane. How many hours on it and the engine? At the price you mentioned, I think you did great!

6800 TT 400 SMOH. It appears the OH was to service limits and I have all the yellow tags, 337's, 8130's and several AD lists (many pretty old) which show its in complance with everything. Annualed in November 06.

I have had it just about a week, flown it twice and have several squawks which need to get cleaned up before I go mess around with the interior (which Im gonna do!)

Here is my punch list so far...

-It needs those baffles Bengie pointed out (air filter).
-Its got a small leak at the gascolator.
-Left gas cap is crooked, but works.
-needs springs and brackets for windows.
-need to get after the leaky cabin (wing root stuff)
-needs a new door lock (keyset and cam)

Thats it. It flies great, just got back from a 1.0 around Newnan, Peachtree City, and Griffin. Was clear but bumpy. Lucky I had my belt tightened. Pretty sporty landings too!

Honestly it's very very easy to gain access to an airplane even with a top of the line mega security lock.

Give me 2 screwdrivers and I'll be in in about 4 seconds.

They are good locks, Paul, but it's a lot like putting a deadbolt on a screen door. The lock's bulletproof, but the windows and doors aren't!

I'm of the opinion that if they want in, make it easy enough that they don't destroy the door (or worse). Locks keep honest people honest, but just annoy thieves!

Well, let's see. This discussion could easilly rationalize putting file drawer locks on the doors to my house or my car. Maybe nylon zip ties would work.

I could literally open the OEM lock on my plane (with no damage and no evidence) with my pocketknife. It looked just as if I left my plane unlocked, which would make my insurance company rub their chin about their liability.

When I get to Clinton, Jeff can have at my Medeco lock. My bet is he will need to beg to get in with a crowbar or cutting the window (not allowed). Beer cans can be opened with almost anything.

I think I am pretty good at getting through locks, but I can't do this one. Perhaps I am just not good enough at felonious acts.

BTW, what does Cessna charge for a lockset?

I have to agree with Jeff, the lock is just a symbolic gesture.

You may have a state-of-the-art lock on one side of the door, but you still only have two pins holding up the other side . . . assuming the crook doesn't want to really hurt the bird, getting in.

If I had a locking system which truly bolted the door thoroughly it would (A) push me over gross weight (I'm already a big boy) and (B) would be the most valuable thing in the plane so THAT's what the crooks would probably take!

Besides, there's something . . . quaint about my Cessna lock. If I forget my key, I just thump the wing strut with the palm of my hand and the door pops open for me. Does that qualify as a biometric security system?

I could also trade my screwdrivers in for one of those suction cups that window guys use. All you need is a good tug on a door to open it with minimal to no damage to your door and latch.

Here's my lock system:

see attached

Just spread 'em around the perimeter of plane.
