Brian is Indiana, but not sure how far from the airplane.
Not far at all. 127.8 nm to be exact, not far from where I bought my 150M.
I'd be happy to fly up and take a look, as long as you don't mind waiting a week. Planning to take the day off next Monday and go flying anyway since it's my birthday, so I wouldn't need you to cover any costs since I'm already going to be in the air.
I'd personally lean towards 36V for a lot of the reasons you mentioned. From the best I can see in the pics, 96K appears to have a KT76A, which can be used for ADS-B Out with the GDL-82 and such, but you could easily upgrade that to a GTX-327 for around $400-$500 give-or-take plus installation. 36V also has a Vernier mixture control. I like those better than the older one found in 96K. Again, that can be another cheap upgrade though, I got one for $100 used from Texas Air Salvage. Add those two upgrades up, and pulling the LORAN (sorry Poobs), you're not going to be far away from where you're thinking of negotiating 36V down to, so it's almost a wash on those points. Agree with the others - tough call here.
I've made just about every first-time-buyer mistake you could make and learned a lot in the process, so I'd be glad to take a look and give you a heads-up on anything I see that sticks out.
