I'm surprised that one can hold onto an N-number indefinitely without assigning it to an aircraft.

For example, I have "vanity" license plates on some of my cars. When I sold one I didn't want to lose the plate. The MVD said I could hold onto it for up to one year, this to allow time to choose and purchase another vehicle. Then it would have to be registered to that car or given up.

I'm surprised there isn't some similar rule with N-number registrations.
