I use a variation of those. 3 lengths of chain connected by a quick link per rope. I tie the rope to the quick link and drive some really big nails into the ground through the end link of each chain segment. The head of the nail keeps the chain from slipping off. No modifications necessary, and the only tool you need is a blunt object to drive the nails.
