I am interested in learning about the options for shipping a plane from America to Scandinavia, because it sounds like at the end of the day, it will be cheaper to find a good one in America than to buy one here in Scandinavia ( or even the rest of Europe). (Especially with the current exchange rates taken into account.) Furthermore, there is obviously a far greater selection in America. the more I learn about plane ownership and flying here, the more I think that it may make sense for me as a US citizen to earn a FAA certficate and then buy and fly a plane on the N register. There are certain rules with operating a plane on the N reg in Norway (the details of which I still have to get from Luftfartsverket (Norwegian CAA), among which is having the annuals done by a mechanic certified to work on N reg planes. Yes, it sounds like there are regulations to abide by there, but again, I have everything to learn and even more to find out. Plane purchase is considerably cheaper in America than here; learning to fly is too, although that may change dramatically if America introduces user fee
May it not happen!
Well, wish me luck folks! One day a Cessna 140 or 150 it will be!

After reading about the 150 trek from the US to Africa... I've got this insane bug to fly an aircraft over the sea.

Hopefully it will end its service life as a momento, not something that you will have to rely on.

I do know somebody indirectly who ditched right next to a freighter and they reeled him in and he went home.

There is the tale of a man who flew a 150 from the US to South Africa via Europe. | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 10,729 Likes: 105 $ Member/10,000+ posts! | $ Member/10,000+ posts! And I think you are very kind to consider it. If I do get my bird, I will certainly remember you.
I must admit, I had thought in terms of crating it because of the vast distances of water and the short range of the airplane.
What would it cost to ferry a 150 to Norway? Is it really realistic to fly such a small plane over such vast expanses of water? I know these are dumb questions, but you have got to remember I am a total greenhorn who doesn't even have her pilot's license yet (but still bound and determined, and ideally in my own plane. If I were to learn in Norway, there are no Cessna 150s to learn on - the local club uses Tomahawks.)
What would your routing be? Canada/Greenland/Iceland/Norway? I know far too little to even be able to ask intelligent questions on such a matter. And wouldn't it have to be in super duper condition all around to venture such a trip?
The chaps in the local flying club here avoid going over water, even when they are just going to England. They all take a southern route, going down through Denmark and Sweden and making the hop where there is as little water as possible. I shall try to ask what they think...they know about the flying conditions.
I too read the post about the 150 being flown to South Africa, but didn't they need to make all kinds of modifications to be able to have the range? If one were to fly a 150 over, would it need to be an IFR plane? It would certainly need long range tanks, wouldn't it?
So much to learn...but an eager, willing brain. Please be patient with my bloopers and tumbles...Jennifer in Norway | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 10,729 Likes: 105 $ Member/10,000+ posts! | $ Member/10,000+ posts! Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 10,729 Likes: 105 | All excellent questions!
Some people crate, some people fly! Personally I'd prefer it flown, less of a chance for damage.
The way to get the range out of the plane is to install a temporary ferry tank! Not too much in the way of modification, just tap into the fuel line.
About the airplane being in excellent shape - ALL airplanes should be in excellent shape, and I'm not talking about how they look.
And I trained in Piper Traumahawks. Excellent plane to train in, miserable on cross countries. I don't want to get in another one again!
