Curious of others’ plans for OSH after the Clinton fly in. I’m planning on CWI to OSH via Fisk VFR arrival Sat or Sun Jul 22/23. Hopefully there are no mass arrivals when I go, but I can’t seem to locate the mass arrivals schedule on eaa.org so I’m not sure. I plan on leaving CWI at dawn or shortly thereafter whatever day I go.

Stay safe!

Bob, My experience is that the mass arrival schedule is not hard and fast but for sure if the weather is good on Saturday there will be an awesome display of Cessnas and Mooneys to gawk at from the sidelines in the North 40, probably starting around 10am Saturday. My plan right now is to get to CWI early to help with setup and then go to OSH but I have no plan in mind otherwise.

I figured as much about the mass arrivals. It’s gotta be like herding cats.

YES, the OSHARRIVAL texts are very helpful. I’ve done that the last couple of OSH trips. I highly recommend it.

Samira and I are going to OSH after CWI this year. We haven’t decided what day exactly we’re arriving. We have a Clinton hotel through Sunday if needed, so we’ll have options. It will be a first time to OSH for us, so we could use some advice on what days are best to arrive. We won’t have a hotel there. I don’t think my back will be happy in a tent for more than two nights.

This will be my 6th time I think.

Most important thing is read the NOTAM. Then read it again. Study it some more. Rubber necking during the Fisk arrival is a must. Two people actually make it safer than one IMO. Make sure you understand the altitudes and turn points for all of the four arrival runways. Know the ATC frequencies. Remember that 90 knots and 1,800 feet mean just that. Don't expect 1,700' or 1,900' or 85 or 95 knots to work. ATC is not shy about telling wayward pilots to go back to the the starting point and begin again.

Here's a good video explaining what NOT to do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-IvPkLKNvQ This controller was very polite to not INSIST he go back and read the NOTAM.

So, do you know within 10 RPM what engine RPM in YOUR plane equals 90 knots at 1,800' ?

Good news everyone. In the Confab NOTAM that Colonel Buckner just published there is a seminar on CWI > Oshkosh. Friday 9am, Flying to AirVenture.

I’m stressed about the NOTAM. I’ve watched the videos. I’ll do my best. Is Saturday, Sunday or Monday better to arrive if I only have two nights. Does the day matter? I want Samira to have an interesting time.

If any of those three days would be equally good then I’ll try for Saturday. What do you think?

Geoff - read the IFR arrival procedure. You have to have a reservation and to make it you have to hit send on your computer just as the time hack clicks over X number of hours in advance. It is much less stressful than the VFR arrival procedure. The last ten years that I flew in, I went in IFR. Worth considering.
