Looks like the perfect storm coming together, Bill!

As far as the medical, AOPA said PBOR2 was attached to the Defense Appropriations Bill in the Senate. I think (hope) the AOPA/EAA are going to keep pushing until they get this done. If you have had a medical in the last 10 years and have not been rejected (so be careful), you would be good to go with a medical exam from your regular doctor and talking him into signing a form. I wish that part would go away. Getting a doctor to do things is difficult sometimes. I'm not sure that part is on the Bill, but it was on the FAA reauthorization bill that included PBOR2 the Senate passed. It was the Fienstein Amendment, I think (I could be wrong). It would really be nice if it didn't get on the latest rendition.

Just make sure it's cleaned up before the transfer of funds takes place.......that's B-E-F-O-R-E the transfer occurs.

It's a headache you don't need trying to clean up the mess after the fact.

Our C-150 had an OLD lien on it when my nephew bought it from a guy in Minnesota. My sister (my nephew's financier smile ) required the guy to get it straightened out. He did it, but I think he whined the entire time!

+1

Old liens can be very, very ugly and very expensive to get rid of. Any lien that can't be cleared up prior to or at closing is, IMHO, a deal breaker.

Warmest regards,
Rick

I didn't mean to imply that it was O.K. to purchase a plane while there was still a lien on it.

Yes, be sure ANY lien is cleared before handing over the cash.

When I buy an airplane, I punch in the tail number at www.faa.gov [faa.gov] and then pay ten bucks to get a CD with all of the airworthiness and registration paperwork that's been filed.

When I sell an airplane, I do the same thing and put the pdfs in a dropbox for potential owners to look through.

From what I can tell, all title search companies do is look through the registration file from the FAA to look for any outstanding liens. If you have the pdf, you can do it yourself.

First time I bought an airplane, I bought three (the danger of going to an auction). I had no idea what I was doing and don't think I slept the first week. Thank goodness I found you guys way back in 2008.

Is there a way to self determine if an aircraft has a lien without paying for an expensive title search? On the FAA cd I see an original release of lean from when the aircraft was purchased new an subsequently paid off. If there were any other liens wouldn't they show up on the cd or do I really need to pay for a title search?
