Let me tell you that landings with no light on the ground is an 8.5 on the pucker scale if your not expecting it.
Part of my instruction many years ago included quite a few landings without turning on the landing light. This was done mostly at MFR, which is a regional airport with all of the standard lighting one would expect. Since then I'm as likely to land with or without the landing light (taxiing is a different story). The real safety issues may be the ability the landing light gives you to see unwelcome objects on the runway and the increased visibiliy it projects to other aircraft or ground vehicles. Either way, the LL is there for a reason and it's a good idea to use it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
