The weekend is almost here. I am in Pennsylvania where, I will stay over the weekend to look at the planes in the local area. Here is a list of planes I will be looking at this weekend and I would appreciate any comments, suggestions, ideas or advice from my fellow club members.

Good God that seems high priced! They are selling that for just 2k less for what I just sold my Skyhawk for.

Actually, it's not too high. Assuming the engine will reach TBO, there are 2000 hrs left; at $6/hr, that's worth $12K. A new paint job is worth at least $4K. Subtract those $16K from the asking price, $14K is not bad for the airframe + interior + avionics. Also, asking price is there for bargaining.

I'll be darn....I didn't think they were that much.

Okay. I see what you all think about a $30,000 152. So what should it cost?

I plugged the numbers into Vref at AOPA site, including a $4K added-value for new paint; Vref gave a quote of $32,900. Since Vref's quote is usually on high side, I think the $30,000 asking price is reasonable. Basically, with that plane, you won't have to worry about an overhaul at least in the next 15 years, if you're a typical owner who flies about 100 hrs per year. If you plan on keeping the plane for a long time, that's not a bad deal. If you're not sure how long you'll own it, then buy something with mid-time engine (say 1200 SMOH) and it'll cost you less.

I went to see the 1st plane today.


Here is what I found:

It was out of annual. I can't remember exactly how long. I think less than a year. It was last certified IFR in 1998 so I guess it could possibly work for training. When the owner was flying it, he was using Avgas because he said 100LL has about four times too much lead. (I have no clue.)

Anyway, the paint had been touched up but it was flaking quite a bit. There were no hail dings at all. The interior was ok except for some cracked plastic in the panel. One of the VORs was completely self-contained, the other was slaved to a Nav radio. I don't know enough about radios to really comment on them but these looked pretty old. One was a 320 the owner indicated was illegal for anything other than backup. (again, outside my realm of knowledge)

All told, the owner was very nice and seemed to be very upfront with the plane's shortcomings.
I don't think this is the plane for me because I feel like I would have to overhaul it which, I understand would cost $10K-$12K. Also, I would probably want to paint it which might add $4 or $5K putting the total cost at about $35000. Even at that, I don't think I would be satisfied with the radios and the IFR state which would just add that much more.

Since it is out of annual, I guess he can't even fly it to a mechanic at another airport for a pre-purchase inspection. I would not want to do the pre-purchase at the same airport. Is it common for mechanices to travel to a plane to do that sort of thing?


More updates on my search tomorrow. I have at least one definate appointment and one tenative. Additionally, I am stopping at every airport and asking the people if there are any 150 or 152 planes for sale. maybe, I will get lucky...

I have just been informed that this plane sold. I really liked this one and was hoping to get to look at it.
