I believe the scales have to be checked for accuracy and certified on some periodic basis. Much like the scales at your local grocery store. I am not an A&P so take that for what it's worth.
Member Ron Twente IS an A&P/IA and has a set of scales. Might be a bit of a hike from Georgia, though.
