And, it is difficult to use the steps anyway. Our 172 had the steps, and trying not to slip off while hanging on with one hand and check fuel caps/level with the other hand is an invitation for disaster!
You're supposed to put one foot on the step on the cowling, then use the handle to pull yourself upward to put your other foot on the step on the strut. You should have two feet on the two steps, and both hands free for checking the fuel level. You're not supposed to hang with one hand on the handle while checking the fuel level.
