I used to carry a small step and also avoid the parasitic drag of the added bits. At the speeds a 150 flies at - it's not huge. But every little you can avoid helps.
If do still ant to do it and you have trouble with the doubler plate - I know one mechanic who simply made it out the correct gauge of AlClad and curved it to suit. Cause that is all it is.
