I bought a little flat folding stool at Walmart for about 10 bucks works just fine for me to stick it and check the fuel if I need to .so I removed my steps and handles, boy what an improvement on the looks of the aircraft
And, it is difficult to use the steps anyway. Our 172 had the steps, and trying not to slip off while hanging on with one hand and check fuel caps/level with the other hand is an invitation for disaster! Standing on top of a step stool can be hazardous but better than the steps.
