Sounds like we did the same sort of thing, although the outfit I worked for had only Call Airs. We used gravel roads that were as close to the field as possible because the airplanes were fairly slow and "you can't make money with the gate closed," ferrying cost money.
I never did get ferried in the airplane, always repositioned via the flag car or the loading truck.
I agree with your application of the word stupid in the context mentioned!
Did you ever get to fly the Call Airs?
