I removed a Cessna 300 series RT359 transponder out of my Aerobat, and it was working when removed,( I flew the day before I had the avionics shop install the new one, so I know it was OK), and I had the bi-annual XPDR check done about a year earlier-again no problems. So I list it on eBay, and my listing clearly stated "as is" due to it being an electronic device.... So, about two weeks later, the buyer emails me and claims the unit was DOA, his current RT359 is OK therefor it must be that the one he bought is bad, and now wants me to respond. You think he swapped out the cavity tube and now is trying to in effect have his unit fixed for free by swapping parts? Is this a scam? Should I offer to have him return it for an exam by my radio shop to see if the cavity tube was switched? I KNOW the unit was good when I shipped it out. -Brian | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 572 Member/500+posts | Member/500+posts Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 572 | Buyer beware on EBAY!! Only if you do a lot of business there and are worried about your rating would I even respond.

AS IS means AS IS,,, That would be my question also. Why did he purchase your transponder when he already had one that was operational? A suggestion might be to get the buyer's phone number and give him a call. Getting a feel of whether he is being sincere or not. At least offering an initial benefit of the doubt. If he is friendly, cooperative, and appears to be honest, maybe work out a compromise? If he is a jerk, well, you just got your answer then of his true intentions................. | | | | Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 18,962 Likes: 3 Member/15,000 posts | Member/15,000 posts Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 18,962 Likes: 3 | This won't help now, but next time, put a dab of "loctite" on a couple of critical screw heads, and take pictures of the unit sitting on "todays" newspaper! Inform the buyer that the unit is "sealed for his protection"! | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 3,062 Visit Put-In-Bay!! Member/2500+posts | Visit Put-In-Bay!! Thanks! I think Loctite makes some of that, too! My dad did that trick on a Cadillac he owned years ago... He bought it new, along with the service coupon book for the regular maintenance jobs. Bring it into the dealer, they tear a coupon out of the book and perform the listed service. One of which was changing the air-cleaner oil (that'll date the car for you folks...). Anyway, my dad suspected the dealership wasn't performing all the service items, especially the 'hidden' ones. So he put a dab of my mom's fingernail polish on the air-cleaner threads and dropped it off at the dealership. The car came back with the service coupon filled out, an invoice for work performed... and the polish still on the threads. So my dad complained to the manager that the oil-bath air-cleaner hadn't been cleaned. The manager said they're not required to clean it. My dad then said that the service coupon listed that item. So the manager said if it was listed, then they did it. That's when my dad pointed to the nail polish.... The manager was fuming, but my dad did get his car serviced properly from then on.
