I've done quite a bit of business with Bill Goodrow at Huron Avionics, 150 North Airport Drive Kimball, MI 48074 (810) 364-2722 and am very pleased with his prices and service. The only downside is that since he's successful, he's very busy, and therefore difficult to reach sometimes.

If you are patient and don't mind following up with him, perhaps a bit more than normal, you'll get a good product and service from an honest guy.

Yep, we were tuned in to the correct station and we were only about 5 miles from the VOR. And, we could hear the station identifier.

Sometimes taking the fuse out and putting it back in alleviates the problem, but that didn't work last week.

Terry,

Thanks for the contact. I'll certainly be giving him a call.

Now I'm really confused!

The VOR head (OBI/CDI) is not driven directly from aircraft power, so does not have a separate fuse! It's powered by output from the nav/com. What fuse are you removing and reinserting that makes any difference? Does this same fuse also affect the nav/com? You may not have a bad indicator after all!

Boy, if you're confused, that's not good. Okay, let's see if I can explain this. Since this is my son's plane and I'm just a beginner, I'm not really sure about the workings of all of the systems. There are three fuses labeled radio. My son has in the past removed one (third one) and upon putting it back in the VOR has returned to life. If it's not the VOR, what would it be?

Sounds like this was the nav/com fuse! You might not have noticed that the radio went dead too? If disturbing the fuse makes that kind of difference, it is obvious the problem is in the fuse itself (automotive fuse, intermittent open), the fuse holder (weak or broken spring, corrosion) or in the connections to the fuseholder. Gotta be in that general area! If it were anything else, playing with the fuse for a month wouldn't make any difference.

Thanks. We'll investigate these areas to see what we find. I'm wondering if it's in the wiring at this point.

Buying a Attitude Indicator (artificial horizon), a Heading Indicator (Directional Gyro), turn and bank or turn coordinator from CESSNA would be like going to your car dealer to purchase a replacement headlight or an oil filter..... expect to get taken. Take a look in Trade-A-Plane, there are zillions of instrument shops and lots of good ones where you can get yours overhauled (cheapest generally) or exchange (usually a little more expensive, but not always) or buy a brand new unit outright.

Cool! Thanks for the suggestion. We have access to the Trade-A-Plane (who doesn't, right? ). We'll check it out.

Also, have you tried just turning the radio on and off to see if that reactivates the VOR head. I generally agree with my "brother" Carl, but in this case, is it possible that the fuse is to blame if the Nav/Com is still operational, but the VOR head isn't?
