I am going to be going a different route on my backup GPS. If anyone is interested in a very lightly used Airmap 100 with all accessories, plus the bonus of "StreetMap" software (including marine/street and waterways databases), shoot me an email off board. Ebay seems to be selling them in the $150 range without the extra software, so I will sell for $150 with it plus free shipping. First Come, First Served. Oh...I bought a database update only a abit over a year ago I believe, so it is relatively current by used GPS standards, and Lowrance still does the updates via diskette.

I think I want "First Dibbs" on that, Jeff! I'll e-mail you later, as I'm not supposed to be on the computer right now!

Carl, I also have a Lowrance Airmap 100. If I can offer any assistance, please give me a shout. My partner and I both use the page with the large CDI and big black arrow pointing to your waypoint by default. Another big hint, if you're flying a multi-waypoint route, use route planning (hit the menu button) and be sure to add your starting point as the first waypoint. Then, when you get to your destination and turn around to come home, simply hit menu | route planning and select, "Reverse Route". Piece of cake.

(And my apologies if you already own a Lowrance and know this stuff.)

I did not know that! See, I learned something today.

I've got an Airmap 500 and have not used route planning yet. I had a route in there but did not put my T/O airport as the first waypoint. I'll have to edit that.

Thanks Greg!

I do appreciate the Airmap and really questioned selling it, but I have high hopes for my PDA experiment.

Anyway, another really cool feature is that all user screens are programmable as to their content. I am afraid to admit that I didn't reset the one I just sold Carl, so he will see one or two screens that don't match the book. I went in and took what I felt were the best features and lumped them where I wanted them on one of the map screens.

It is also nice that you can look up airports not only by designator, but by city too (hopefully I am not confusing that with another program I have).

In any event, reverse routing was a very useful feature as is the auto start sequence which as long as you don't do manual zoom, will start wherever you left off and advance the map for you. I used it in this mode from 6S2 to CWI with 3 overnight stops on the way...each day, just turn it on and it would start where I left off as soon as reaching the pre-designed speed (can't remember the speed either).

Nope! Don't know nothin', yet!

My first GPS, and looks like a great choice! I haven't had time to read much of the manual yet, but have found most of the functions intuitive. I am impressed with the response time. After aquiring a position, I selected the "group b" page, and took 2 steps! . . WHOA! This thing is already showing a ground speed, and the altitude is 4 feet higher than our runway (I'm holding it 4 feet off the ground!) On the way home tonight, I tried the backlighting. I reset the trip meter, and reset the speed to 5mph (you had it on 70mph, Jeff, for liftoff). Very pleasant, and the bug followed exactly my route home on the moving map set at 1 mile width. I now know it is 23.2 air miles to work!

I especially wanted it for the marine features, too. Now I can measure the speed and direction of currents, know exactly where I am on the charts, and finally know how fast (slow) my sailboat really is!

Will it change the way I navigate? Old "If you can't navigate without electronics, you shouldn't leave the ground" Carl?

Yes! Definately! But, it will always remain just a backup to the seat of my pants. Heck, I'd still be listening for the letters A & N, if I could! (yeah, I'm that old!)

I'm going to get very familiar with this unit before I take it flying. I don't like distractions in the cockpit! (maybe that's why the wife doesn't fly)!

How many Airmap owners are we? Might be an interesting thread you've started, Greg!

Last year I bought a used original Airmap for $200. Its looks and functions are identical to the Airmap 300, but has only 5 channels instead of 12. I upgraded the map cartridge for $75. I like its display of obtructions; helpful when going into unfamiliar areas.

I take it from your post that you use your plane to fly to work. Do you do this occasionallly, regularly, as often as possible or did I misunderstand?

Seems like flying to an airport at your work or near your work and then getting into a car at your destination airport to finish the journey if necessary would be a good time builder.

Is there anyone else out there who has a routine that regularly involves utilizing their plane to get back and forth to work?
