While I was pre-flighting the plane the mechanic asked me if I knew anyone who needed a O-235 with the 125HP conversion ? 0-time rebuild. Little did he know that I have a 152 with a high time engine and have been looking at options for the next year or so.
He said the instructor at the University of Alaska Anchorage who heads up the A&P program rebuilds 2-3 engines a year in his spare time and this is one of his projects. I asked him how much he wanted for it and he said $10,000.
I?m thinking about it. I?d have to research it more, and would go talk to the guy who rebuilt it, but I?m thinking if it all checks out, and if he?d take $8,000 - $9,000 for it I might just make a run at this thing.
Thoughts?

Ya might want to check into it, though. Oh, don't forget to get the STC paperwork, too. Bengie

Do a search in this forum on "Sparrowhawk" and you'll find a whole evening's worth of reading on the pros and cons of the STC'd 125HP conversion ... and even Lycoming's letter that casts doubt on the wisdom. I'm not 100% convinced in my own mind, but if I could get this engine with the extra HP, install it this weekend and forget about my high time engine issues and get it for less than $10k I might be persuaded.
After all, do I want to fly a 2000 hour engine from Alaska to Clinton this summer or a sporty 125HP engine that is barely broken in?
(btw ... I already have the sparrowhawk prop)

I think this would be a great deal at $10K. Even better at $9k.

I'm taking the next step on this thing. The mechanic/owner is faxing over the logbook entries related to the rebuild and my mechanic and I are going to get the microscope out and see what we can find. He's sticking to his price, but I may have found someone who will give me more than I expected for my engine, so I'm still looking at a net cost of around $6,000 for a new engine.
If we do this thing, my mechanic and I are going to do the best we can to get a comprehensive performance comparison between my 2000 hour O-235 and this zero-time sparrow hawk conversion. I'll repeat the performance comparison when it has 200 hours on it.
I'll keep you posted.

The owner has the logbooks, and details about the rebuild, but he said, inexplicably, the yellow tags are missing? Negotiating point or permission to run like hell?
