Has anyone replaced the bulb for the panel lights behind the red cover with an LED? Looking for something brighter than whats in there now.

Thanks!
Brian

I'll be very interested in hearing from anyone who has done this.

A lot of white LED lights don't put out much red light, so it would be much better to use a red LED with a clear window. I looked a couple of times for a red LED, but haven't found anything with the right base, and I'd rather keep it to just a direct replacement if possible. There's also a chance that a replacement could cause radio noise, but I haven't gotten any to test.

Few aircraft use red lights anymore. Why would you want to use them in your Cessna? Unless you want your 150 to be true to the original design, there is no reason to use red lights.

Cheers, Elliot

The big Boeings I flew had one red light, and it was out on the wingtip. Everything in the cockpit was white. Some guys flew with the overhead cockpit lights on bright when we were cruising. I never did that, but I did have them on at a low level.

I tried to fly a 150 at night last week trying to get home, but I had the same issue, the light was so dim I could not read the instruments, so I found a hotel and spent the night.

My airplane has white Nulites in the instruments, a white panel floodlight, and red and white panel lights under the glareshield, but I never use the red ones.

Oh, and I put an LED loading light in the baggage compartment. That's it further back behind the speaker.

I also added two map lights, one over each door, switchable to red or white.

Uh proven not to be an issue if used properly.

There has been debate for years that blue or green light is better than red for illumnation while preserving night vision.

One such discussion. [cruisersforum.com]

I've always used red myself and never had an issue.

RE: the dim light in a standard 150 overhead instrument panel light - that is why I always used to wear one of these [mypilotstore.com] when flying at night. It's a shame that didn't come up in conversation at your departure airport prior to your pre-flight Mark, someone might have sent one of these along with you...

I use this LED with the stock red lens for my overhead instrument lighting.
Saves power and is dimmable with the stock rheostat.
At full power is too bright (red) at night but you can see your instruments even when dialed down. (dimmer is better).

instruments are backlit Dimmable Led's.

digital panels all dimmable also.
