If you’re going to go the route of the simple cigarette lighter adapter for charging iPads and such, then I suggest only buying the Sporty’s unit:
https://www.sportys.com/flight-gear-dual-usb-quick-charger.htmlThe reason is this - it’s the only one that was specifically tested to work in airplanes without causing radio interference.
In my experience, cheap chargers tend to produce noise on the radio. Sometimes it’s loud, sometimes it’s just a soft background hiss, sometimes it changes depending upon what device is plugged in and how depleted the batteries may be. Sometimes the noise is not noticed until trying to receive a distant station.
Brand-name chargers, such as from Apple or Samsung, tend to be much better in this regard (and consequently more expensive). The really cheap ones and/or unknown brands, such as those sold in kiosks at gas stations and hardware stores tend to be the worst. With Amazon you have no idea what you’re getting.
The reason why is these chargers are not simple devices with a transformer and may be a couple of diodes. They are miniature switching power supplies with high-frequency circuits. It’s easy to build a power supply that will charge electronics. It’s harder (and more expensive) to build one that will do it without generating noise. It’s much the same problem with LED lights. Cheap ones are noisy, expensive ones tend not to be.
The panel-mount chargers are really nice - well-designed, well-shield, wired up properly, and won’t wiggle loose in a worn socket in turbulence, leaving your device discharging without your knowledge. Expensive, yes, but much more secure and reliable.
