That's interesting. I have several antennas mounted on the bottom, including a couple that I had mounted myself (DME, marker beacon). No special documentation or re-engineering was required, just consideration to weight and balance, so I suppose there's no reason that the VOR "V" antenna could not be mounted on the bottom as well. It would seem to have good exposure going to and from the station. Shoving that round thing up in the tail beacon to replace the existing parts -- which are still available -- seems kludgey to me, however. But, come to think of it, if it were done in a professional manner, maybe it's OK. Radios and antennas change all the time. There were no GPS or ADS-B when these planes were made, for example.
