This plane is 37 serial numbers older than Sierra and Sierra has about 300 fewer hours. I'll bet it's a real hoss though in the performance arena.

There is not much I'd change--maybe add an autopilot. How fun would it be to take that one home? | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 11,439 Likes: 947 Member/10,000+ posts! | Member/10,000+ posts! Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 11,439 Likes: 947 | Some years back a flew a tailwheel 150 with a 180-HP engine towing gliders. I found that I didn't much like the airplane, purely subjective opinion. The climb rate was wonderful and it was much better than a Super Cub (150 HP) for glider tow. However, I found it to have strange handling in level flight (I didn't fly it level very much). More power is destabilizing on any airframe and I wonder if that's what made me uncomfortable in that particular airplane. I've certainly heard rave reviews of 180-HP 150s from others and I don't doubt that they are correct. Never fell in love with that particular 150 - and didn't like the very soft gear on it.
I don't recall the useful load. I was solo except for one flight where a photographer rode along to get images of the glider on tow. | | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 2,394 Likes: 2 Member/1500+posts | Member/1500+posts Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 2,394 Likes: 2 | A friend of mine is in talks with the broker/owner to buy it.
Personally my thoughts align with Rick's and I made the suggestion he will get more value out of a 172 for his mission, but this is what he wants so I'm helping him with the logistics since it's his first purchase.
When looking for my next Mooney I seriously considered the Mooney Rocket (K model conversion with 305HP vs 210HP) and was in prebuy with one, but I think it is just too much for what it was made for. Constantly cracked exhaust pieces, mounts, and other items confirmed my gut feeling and ultimately deterred me.

I hadn't considered that more power might be a bad thing! But Dale sure seems to enjoy his.

Have a friend who owned a Rocket for many years and was quite happy with it. I flew it once and was blown away by the performance. However, 'm not surprised about the issues you describe. | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 9,272 Likes: 153 Member/7500+posts | Member/7500+posts Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 9,272 Likes: 153 | I flew Royson's 180HP fuel injected 150 Aerobat at Clinton some years back ... what an amazing airship ... climb was phenomenal, cruise was spectacular but the hot restart was interesting.
