Don't know where you are, but in this part of the country (south central), Mena, Arkansas, seems to be the paint capital for airplanes. A little over a year ago I was looking at a C-150 that needed paint badly and I had the same question you now have. I got a quote from one of the Mena companies for a "sand and paint" same colors and same paint scheme for about $3,200 I believe. I have the name of the company and the contact info at work. If you're interested, I can email it to you tomorrow.

Don

Ouch, I don't think a scratch and squirt paint job at $3200 is that good of a deal if $1800 more will buy you a strip and paint. But...I am out of touch with reality. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Yep, in fact I have a paint date reserved, with a quote for $8K for strip, alodine, and paint. I've replaced all the glass and fairings in anticipation of this, but now I'm buying a 172. I'd really like to see it through, but I'd never recoup the expense. It's only worth it if you're keeping it.

$8k-$10k may be the going price of quality paint in California, but that's a little steep in the rest of the country! You wouldn't have to fly very far east to save 2 to 5 thousand.

Brian, don't be bitter just because everything cost so much in CA. Don, don't need the name of a paint company just yet but wanted to get an idea on cost. Sounds like one could get a descent job done for $5k. If they're still offering jobs for $3200, it's worth it to fly the plane over there. That's a good deal. Even if it isn't a perfect CA job

CA EPA is the problem. It's just too hard (and expensive) to get handling permits for good stipper, good paint, and hazardous waste disposal. If I took time off work to fly to TN or AR and back (and all related expenses), it would probably end up costing just as much, though. HOWEVER, the experience would be priceless.

Well, my A&P advised me to VREF my plane with new paint ($26,272.59), then subtract the quoted price of a new paint job ($8000.00), and use that as a selling price for my plane.

Sigh... I guess I'll have to lower it again....

I am not sure I would use $8,000 for a paint job. I would find the average for around the nation and use that. It seems to be what part of the country you are in on what the price of a good paint job is.

Well, I know you can get a good job cheaper than here in CA, but then there's the logistics of getting the plane somewhere else, then not being around to monitor or check up on things as the work progresses, or DOESN'T!!! It isn't practical for me to fly to Tenn. for a paint job, then have to airline back and forth, hotels, the long flight in a 150, weather, and so on. All that can eat up any money you save going out of state. I could always hire or get some starving flight instructor who wants to build time to ferry it for me, but that too has it's own set of problems.
You can't even get good rattle can paint here in the 9 SFO Bay Area counties. They "smogged" it, it's like 1/2 the paint and a different propellant. Lousy! Gotta mail order it if you want good stuff, fortunatly AC Spruce and Chief can still ship us the good stuff.

BTW- I need a paint job badly! I just did the engine, and the next phase is cosmetics. I have an AEROBAT, so that's a bit more in price due to all the checkerboard and stripes on the wing. Still, the '73 Aerobat had the best scheme of all the Aerobat paint designs (IMHO), so that's what I'm going to keep it as.
