I've been around the forum for a while, but now I'm looking for a 150, under 25 preferably 20 or under. I know low ball but its my price range. I've been debating the 150 because I live at a high altitude. The field elevations is 6353 and density can get up over 10,000 in the summer. The summer of course is our worst season for flying.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi, while I'm learning about the 150 (even though they were my main trainer when I started decades ago).

Welcome, Bob. There are a few 150/150's around, but most of them will be more than your budget I would guess. My field elevations is 212 msl, so I can't offer much advice about flying a standard 150 from your field. You are pretty high up there!

I've flown in and out of KSVC (Silver City, NM) during the July. It's only at 5440 feet, but it took a lot of extra care at summer DAs. Landings were a matter of flying onto the runway; there was no flare and I applied ten degrees of flaps only after crossing the numbers. Takeoffs required resisting the temptation to pull back on the yoke; waiting until there was sufficient airspeed to let the airplane lift off in a level attitude. Otherwise, the airplane would wobble along in ground effect until it reached the site of the crash.

As much as I like flying a 150, I think I'd be looking at an older 172 or some other aircraft if I lived at your altitude.

I’ll be the second (of many I will predict) to recommend you look at other airplanes if you are flying out of an airport with a 10,000 foot density altitude. The 150 is an awesome plane but it’s rate of climb isn’t its strongest suit. Unless of course you can score one with a 150hp conversion.

It's not just getting the wheels off the runway that matters but also what are the options for when the engine quits. I fly in and out of Gunnison, CO during the summer, but I only depart before the DA gets above 8500 and only down the valley, not up it. Even then, there are some long minutes of pucker until the grounds drops away enough that options become available. Landings at high DA are abrupt and would be even more so with an engine out in a 150.

Bob, I picked up and moved away from Colorado just so I could own a 150 and actually go places other than Kansas. If you have a hangar or covered parking option, maybe the pacer or a higher hp colt?? My buddy had a 59' 172 w/ 145hp (I think) which honestly didn't seem any more capable then the 150 that I was flying out of Centennial. I got my ppl in a 152 and 150 flying out of the Denver metro airports, lots of fun.
