In need of a set of good O-200 magneto gears. If anybody has a line on some or a suggestion as to where I might find a reasonably priced set - let me know!!

Need them yesterday.

No dice, eh?

Apparently, these particular gears tend to wear - has anyone else had that experience?

Sorry, Steve.....I'm utterly worthless on this topic.

Sounds like you've hit an unexpected snag?

I really haven't had an experience like yours but my two cents is that if the gears are worn out, what about the remainder of the mags and even more importantly, is there any metal in the oil system? Worth a sample check. Mike.

Mike, Steve's engine is in the middle of being overhauled.
I believe it is in the process of being reassembled and has run into this little problem.

you could say that.

I have had nearly-new magnetos in a box since I bought them pre-emptively 3-ish years ago (since mine had no documented history of service in 1800 hours). I thought the gears were on them... but when the engine guy opened the box, no gears. I looked back at the sale communications and sure enough, "no gears" was stated.

Rats.

As some may be aware, I sold my core engine, and bought one from the west coast - TT was 6000+ hours, but most major parts were overhauled & ready for assembly... but what I really liked were the new cylinders that came with it (ECI Titan Cerminil).

Most of the big parts ended up being sold because I also bought another younger engine from a member here (same engine the mags came from), and then overhauled those parts to be built into a complete engine. Unfortunately, the magneto gears somehow lost their way. So I sent my builder the gears from the west-coast engine, but he took one look at them and said they were too worn. This guy has done nothing but re-build aircraft engines for 30+ years so he's seen a few gears - if he says they're no good, I have to trust him.

There's a very small chance Josh has them at his place - he's checking. But neither of us recall coming across them when we first inventoried the engine parts. So... that has me in search of a good set of gears. If nothing turns up by tomorrow, I'll be buying a new set. Another grand I'd rather spend on an ILS indicator or new seats, but none of that is any good if I don't have gears to drive the mags.

Steve

I have a set with my core O-200 that will be going on Barfly. If you need a set "right now", I can send them to Aircraft Specialties to get them yellow tagged and then send them your direction. When you find a serviceable set down the road, just send them in for yellow tags and have them shipped to me. I am still a few years out from needing the gears so I can wait for you to find a reasonably priced set of replacements.

Thanks James... I've replied to your PM.

Those gears on eBay have quite a bit of pitting on the faces, the yellow tags from A.S.S. just ensure no cracks or structural flaws - they don't necessarily guarantee satisfactory condition. (as I understand it anyway) That whole line on the tag of "additional inspection may be required" deal... frown

I've sent the link to my mechanic though and asked him what key details to look for in determining serviceability condition.

Hi Steve,
Try Joe at Premier air parts in Barrie. I know he brought in a couple of 150's lately. 705-333-1396
