IMHO the time on the engine unless within a few hundred hours of TBO has almost nothing to do with the "health" of the engine. How much its flown recently is VERY IMPORTANT!

Agreed. Turns out that 36V was field overhauled at the flight school’s shop and they used 5 reman lifters and 3 new ones. Also, as of now I can’t reconcile the logs on 36V. It looks like there’s 7780 TTAF on 36V, not the 5908 from the ad. Weird. I’m hoping the 96Kilo is a repres3nted more truthfully. If it pans out I’ll buy it ASAP.

Lachlan,

Just saw this on the Aviation Buy and Sell group on Facebook:

Hey guys. Trying to help within the group. I was going to buy it then decided to go to a 172 and get something a little more ready. The owner name is Newman Debea. He is 86 years old and can’t fly anymore. I went looked at plane yesterday and it is in exceptional shape inside and out. Just has dust on it from sitting in hanger. Good wash and wax it would look new. I started the plane and taxi it around. I had to jump it twice because the engine was flooding and was trying to keep starting it. The man has all logs and books for airplane. 74/76/78/68 are the compression if I remember it right. One cylinder is new. The plane does not have a transponder or encoder, I would have just put at GTX 320 in it for now until its time for ADSB. The man posted it on barnstormer but does not know how to post pictures. He is a good guy. The engine smoh is I think 1779. It did not have an oil leak. It is out of annual.
Smoh:1779
AFTT: 4700
Location: Bunkie, La
$11,000 firm
Phone: 318-240-0730 you may have to call him more than once.

At this price, there’s room for a field overhaul of the engine and a few repairs.

Lachlan, How specific do you want to get in your search? What are you looking for? Just curious. Do you have a hard price you won't go above or are you willing to borrow whatever you need? Are you going for an instrument platform or will basic instruments do? Dreaming of an Aerobat or do you need a Commuter? Will you need more useful load or to keep it light due to DA concerns or will you always be solo? What kind of flying do you see yourself doing, hamburger runs or XCs or both? Are you comfortable doing maintenance or will your shop do it? Do you want low engine time or are you OK with higher? Do you dream of a 150/150 or a tail wheel conversion or is the tricycle gear what you want?

I'm sure you've already asked yourself all that. The reason I bring it up is I got real specific about my needs, my wants and my wishes. That helped me eliminate a lot of planes and focused my search. If you don't mind a project or just want an airplane to fly, then you'll have a lot of choices. If you have a goal for the airplane, you'll have fewer.

My needs: I had a hard purchase price limit I would not go over, $25K. No timed out engines. I would not consider a plane with over half the TBO on the engine time. Absolutely no projects and I will not be doing my own maintenance.
I wanted an IFR set up to get my IR in, but didn't get it. I had to put additional money in over time for that, so I still got it eventually.
I wished for LR tanks and new paint and interior but didn't get those. But I'm OK with it. I had new TN Wings seat covers installed. I'll have the airplane repainted eventually.

Just a thought,
Geoff

Those are good questions, Geoff. I'm really a lot like you were with budget and engine considerations. I would like to spend around $26,000, 1966 or newer, but would spend a little more for something really solid. (Newer GPS, a digital transponder, full overhaul, etc) I really want to stack the deck in my favor regarding engine longevity, even though that's always a roll of the dice. Something with 500-750 hours on a properly overhauled engine. I need 500lbs useful load. I plan to tool around the pattern, shoot holes in the sky for an hour or two here and there, with the occasional xc flight. My wife is tiny, and the two of us could fly with full fuel and still have a fair amount of room to spare. I love wrenching on stuff, so maintenance doesn't scare me at all, at least not the stuff we're allowed to do as pilots. Anything I could do under the watchful eye of an A&P would be fun. 100 hp is fine. 125 is better. 150 would be freakin awesome! Except for that loss in useful load, range, increased gph, and on and on. A taildragger would be really cool, too, but I'd have to insist on a Lowe conversion, or at least one that used 140 gear. The stock 150 gear is too short and they sit too flat with no room under the prop even sitting still, let alone during takeoff. Dreams? A factory new engine in a fully refurbed airframe with a brand new interior, new plexi, shiny paint, GNS, ADS-B in/out, intercom, dual G5s, comfy seats, 510 lb UL, for sale only 30 miles away, for 25 grand. Why not?

There will be other airplanes. I’ll find a good one. There’s no hurry. I’ve learned some good stuff here already.

Looks like the guy who beat me to 96Kilo won’t be buying it after all. It’s available again and I’m apparently next in line. What to do....?
