Ed:

In my world there are two types of people: Problem People, and Solution People! Well, you know where this guy in Ohio stands in my book.

As a group of people here, you could not ask for a better association. Two years ago when I started my PPL, I thought the world of aviators in general, today, that has to be proven by the individual. I was standing with Waren Bender, N31 CFI yesterday, and we talked about this very same thing, as we are here..... as a group, we need to stop the slide in aviation, and improve the personification of that group, by first removing/eliminate, those whom simply are in it for what they can take. Furthermore, we need to restore honesty and integrity at the core, before any of us, will see an improvement in aviation in general. Funny, you could say that about the country in general too!

Thanks, Herb

Herb,

What was the "hull value" that your plane was insured for? Was it 25K? I'm curious about the "appreciation" that was used in figuring the settlement amount. I wouldn't think an insurance company would offer to pay more than what the plane was insured for, unless they have an ulterior motive.

Herb,
I sent hiw the following
We know the previous owner that did all the work to it.
The plane was damaged by hail in April and sold at insurance auction becausethe cost to repair the damage properly would have exceeded $30K

His response :

Great...is he interested in buying it back. Like I said, I've seen the plane in person....there's no damage. Must be fixed now.
p.s. I repaired a 152 a couple years ago that had real hail damage....reskined all upper surfaces, replaced flight controls, repainted......didn't spend anywhere near 30K.

It's too bad the world has so many of these type.
As Roy had proven there is nothing that can be done about
it either.

I'd LOVE to remove a wing tip and have a "look see" at the bottom side of the upper wing skin. The poor gal is probably a bondo queen now.

How sad.

Seems like the gauntlet's been thrown - anyone near Xenia, OH that can verify his claims?

Heck yeah, Xenia is just down the road from my airport. It's very near where the guys parked their planes when they went to the Dayton Air Museum. Wonder if it's tied down outside?

Maybe I'll swing by there Saturday afternoon for a look
see...

Hung:

We had 25,000 with two years of appreciation; thus, 26,150 with the deductible removed. AIG's own mechanic/repairshop had put in an estimate to fix, based only on the pictures of 22,000. So, you can see why the plane was a total loss.

I assure you, in the time frame this guy owned this aircraft, there's no way he replaced the flight controls, and/or repaired this aircraft. Please keep in mind, it never left my hanger until the third week in June.

Thanks, Herb Rose

Has anyone contacted the buyer to warn them or tip them off?

Does anyone know the specific damage history regs the guy is breaking? Playing devils advocate here, I was under the impression that hail damage isn't something that has to be included in the logs because it doesn't effect the flight characteristics of the airplane. The seller certainly isn't being honest but is he being criminal?

Hail damage, depending on the severity of it, can cause skin cracking at the dents, and merely filling them with bondo or the lightweight stuff and repainting is generally not considered "kosher" in the aircraft maintenance biz. I do not think that Cessna has a service bulletin covering this (but they should) that would set damage limits. On large aircraft (where the hulls are pressurized) this kind of damage is of great concern. On unpressurized aircraft, while not the same level of concern, it still needs to be looked at, and reinspected at each annual. As far as airwothinesess goes, its a huge grey area, that I for one would not want to tread into.

Had I been Herb, I would have made a clear, concise log book entry detailing the date of the damage, the approximate number and size and depth of the dents in each area, so that future owners would either know, or the logs would have to disappear, greatly lowering the value of the airplane, even if it were "repaired", legimately or not.

Hi,
The plane has no damage history, or hail damage. I don't have any pics of the top of wings, but you're welcome to come look at the plane. Just call the phone # in the listing to set up a time.
Thanks.
