Much easier to keep updated than a handheld unit, and it would provide a lot of utility beyond the cockpit.

Your post made me wonder if you'd be at all interested in a KLX 135 if I upgrade in the spring. One of the reasons I haven't thought much about changing it out is that the KLX 135 is so easy and works so well! My plane is IFR certified, but the GPS is VFR only. I could probably convince myself I want an upgrade to a Garmin 430W. When I bought N60860, a 1969 J model, the KLX 135 was already installed. I had it refurbished by Honeywell Service in 2014. I've been dutifully updating the VFR data every 28 days ever since then. I don't know what it's worth, nor if you'd be interested, but it does do what you typed you need. It's an early GPS (circa 1994) with no moving map, only an on screen indicator. It's been completely reliable for me, much more so than my backup (ipad). Food for thought, anyway. It is a PPC. | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 2,316 Likes: 53 Member/1500+posts | Member/1500+posts Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 2,316 Likes: 53 | A used iPhone with a free WingX VFR subscription should also work and would be fairly inexpensive. The screen would be a lot nicer than an older handheld.
What is a PPC?

Our intent was to make VFR Free! really free. However, there is no Tier 0 (free) pricing option for subscriptions. The next lowest price is 99c. We'll send all our proceeds for VFR Free! subscriptions to a charity that helps children.
You download the app, and select the level of subscription you want. CFI's also get a free subscription. I don't know how that process works.
