I need to have transponder repaired and was thinking about upgrading. Not ready to go all the way with ADS-B yet so looking for something else. I may be wrong, but I’m betting ADS-B equipment keeps getting cheaper. Anyone have a good transponder they want to part with? Why doesn’t some electronic genius redesign Loran units into something useful.

Loran units are useful as a boat anchor.

With a mile of highway, you can go one mile. With a mile of runway, you can go just about anywhere.
The 150 I bought has really old avionics. I flew yesterday and found out today that my old Nav Comm 300 is transmitting intermittently. I got 2 other NavComs with the plane, one supposed to work and one for parts, but I think I’ll upgrade it too when I can afford it.
A true testament that some of this older stuff keeps on plugging away after all the years (decades) of temperature changes, damp environments, vibration and knob twisting that has occurred over the decades.
I think it's easy to loose sight on how impressive this really is although the new(er) stuff is pretty nice as well.

The newer stuff is really nice, but I wonder how it will be performing in 49 years (the age of our C-150). I guess some of us may still be around to see .

Unless I'm very wrong, lack of support will be the biggest killer item on this front.
As an example, my perfectly functioning GX55 GPS had a simple display issue years ago but the vendor quit manufacturing them for Garmin (Apollo) so it couldn't be fixed.

Rather sad but it's the reality we're faced with.

I guess our avionics are going the way of the cell phones and computers we all use. After 5 or 10 years, they are obsolete.
Currently it has a KT-78 transponder with a ACK A-30 blind encoder. According to the previous owner it works, but the indicator light doesn’t work so I’m not sure and haven’t been anyway where I could verify it’s functionality. I thought it might be just as cheap to get a more modern transponder. Thanks
