My mechanic is in need of a rear bulkhead / spinner backplate for a J model that has had some rather dodgy annuals the past few years. He's bringing it back up to snuff, and found the backplate to be cracked in two locations.

Looking to purchase one, or direction as to which suppliers might be better than others, who to avoid etc.

I believe the part number required is 0450040-1.

thanks!

Steve,

See the “1969 150J Spinner Replacement Options” posted on “Tech Questions” on 07/16/2017.

The rear bulkhead, # 0450040-1, fits 150 F, G, H, J, K, and a used one is hard to find in good condition. The new price is advertised at $850 - $1200. You may find one on eBay for $380 - $475, but beware: Used bulkheads may have cracks or be work hardened.

Univair sells a new PMA model for $338 + shipping. The Univair backing plate, U0450040-1, is in stock, very well made and probably better than the original. If your mechanic can get a discount from Univair you will get your best deal.

What's the diameter of the backplate?

Mine has 4 or 5 cracks, don't know how it stayed on! I just ordered a new one from Kim Weckerly:

https://www.precision-welding.com/

It is an owner produced part somehow. $200 plus shipping. I will have to install the nutplates, but that should be easy.

Backing plate cracks, spinner cracks, extra weight... Sure, spinners make our "One Dinkey's" look like the big guys, but there's no appreciable speed gain. Most block some airflow to the engine. I dumped mine for a skull cap.

Spinners are on birds to direct the airflow into the cowling for proper cooling. On the higher performance birds, they're essential.

BTW - spinners are also used for other things, such as the tip of the spinner being used as the datum on Cherokees.

Joseph, I just had my mechanic order Univair backplate and spinner. He said he'll get a discount that he'll pass on. Thanks for the link!

Good decision! Fresh metal and proper installation with pre-load on front spacer will give years of service.
