Why don't you go ahead and put a Chevy engine in your 150 ? Cheaper than an O-200 and more powerful.

Poobs and Hung, I have been told many times on this forum that you should not wrestle with a pig in the mud.
You'll both get dirty but the pig likes it. Or something to that effect.

Evidently the regulations only apply to certificated pilots, student and above.

Tell that to the FAA, okay?

What's with you, anyway?

I hope that those of us that are new to aircraft ownership and this aviating business disregard what this guy says. Rarely, he is somewhat correct, but remember, a stopped clock is correct twice every day. This crap that is posted is illegal, wrong and above all, DANGEROUS.

You do not have carte blanche to do with your aircraft whatever you want to do.

By the way, I enjoy looking at small town newspapers. Anybody else do that? I remember, Dave Letterman used to have a segment from time to time on Late Night, called "Small Town News". Anyone remember that? That had some really funny stuff sometimes! And interesting material sometimes - amusing, down-home stuff, and enlightening. For example, real estate transactions - who's moving out, who's moving in, weird "For Sale" ads, and police blotters - so-and-so was ticketed for spitting on the sidewalk, so-and-so got a ticket for running a stop light or stop sign, whomever called because the dog was barking at 2 am, so-and-so was issued a criminal warrant... things like that. Amusing at times for sure, particularly when you recognize the name.

All from the home office in Wahoo, Nebraska.

I can just hear Fish screaming "conspiracies", "kickbacks" when he can't get any IA to certify his customized 150 as airworthy.

My questions are:
- Is it essential to replace the generator...?

My 150D had a 35-amp generator. I had a single MAC-1700 Nav/Com (Digital flip-flop conversion of a King KX-170B) with a VOR indicator, intercom, transponder, wing-tip strobes, and the usual beacon and lights. It worked just fine - the battery stayed charged, and the lights didn't dim.

The biggest advantage of an alternator over a generator is that it can deliver a charge a much lower RPMs. Typically, a generator has to spin up to 1700 RPM or so before it's putting out full power. That's because generators don't handle high RPMs that well so they're geared to run slower. Alternators can spin much faster due to their design. As such, they can be geared to run faster at low RPMs.

I did plan on installing an alternator, though, only because I wanted to set the plane up for IFR with dual nav-coms, glide-slope, and a marker-beacon/audio panel.
