Thanks Henry. That's one good looking airplane! Panel looks great too, and IFR as well. Vernier mixture cable and 327 digital transponder... very nice.

No Alex. Just a very friendly awesomely knowledgeable FBO that is always helping us owners.

I haven't heard from Jim, but I just saw the plane posted on the Cessna Pilots Association forums.

Quote

I'm posting this for an acquaintance. He purchased this previously Texas based 172M about 5 years ago and set about to make it his for short trips around the South. To that end he installed within the last 2 years a factory new Lycoming 0320 D2J with roller tappet cam, Garmin 750 GPS, Garmin 340 Audio panel, Garmin 330 transponder, etc. No corrosion and plane is stored in a personal t-hangar. We learned about 3 weeks ago that Jim has terminal brain cancer and his wife has asked our assistance in selling the plane. Information is as follows:

Total time: about 7,000 hours
Total Engine time: about 90 hours since factory new Lycoming 160 hp 0320D2J
No. 1 GPS/NAV/COM: Garmin 750
No. 2 NAV/COM: King KX 155
Autopilot: STEC 20
Transponder: Garmin 330
Audio panel: Garmin 340

Paint is 8 out of 10 and interior is about the same. Plane has been hangared most of its life including during Jim's ownership. Price is $85,000 or best offer. They know that they will not come close to recouping what was put into the plane and they'd like it to go to a good home.

Jim also told me a week or so ago that the wings were pulled and totally rebuilt with new spars, leading edges, and skins. Interior was totally coated with epoxy sealant to prevent corrosion.

I feel very bad for Jim. I presume he is not doing well, since he's not answering my e-mails. He poured a lot of work into this plane, spending over $150k to get it where it is.

Much discussion at the FBO about Jim's condition and his airplane. We pretty much all agree the plane is worth every bit of $70K. I just hope the owners don't settle for a low ball offer as many buyers tend to do. I did some research and I can't find anything close to the condition of this plane much less at this price.

As sad and heart wrenching as this story is, I would have to wonder why this was done were I a potential buyer.

There are only two reasons that I can think of.

Regardless though, Cindy's dad died from brain cancer and I feel for Jim and his family....this is a very tough road that they are on.

i think the plane had some hail damage and also some corrosion that was completely repaired. This plane was taken apart and rebuilt. Jim really wanted it perfect. It was perhaps not financially sound to put the work he did into the plane, but now he has a plane that is almost like new.
