It might just be a fuse or something like that, either internal to the radio or in the airplane. Our #2 NAV/COM fuse sometimes acts up even though the fuse it good. I can turn the fuse holder and it usually starts working. I would hate to see you spend money for a new radio when you don't really need one (even though I realize you may want a more modern radio). The second NAV/COM may not get used a whole lot.

That's a great idea. I am also (per suggestion) going to swap COM 1 and 2 around to see if it's the tray/wiring. I just need to stop flying it and do some troubleshooting!

Thanks, I will check. Squelch knob didn't help anything.

Good news! On the advice of Lyle, I pulled the radio out today in order to swap the RT328T and the MX300. Before I pulled the MX I took a look at the 328T pins on the back. Turns out there was a bent pin. I straightened out the pin and re-installed the radio. Lo and behold the quick com check with my handheld worked great. I couldn't check NAV because I was in the hangar and there was no way to pick up the VOR. I will do a proper check on both COM and NAV (hopefully) tomorrow. The RT328T is not a long term solution for me but it looks like I at least have dual COM's again. Thanks everybody for the suggestions.

Good news, Mark. At least now you have some breathing room! I had quite a bit of static in my MX 300. I pulled the radio out and used contact cleaner. I had to use a soda straw to clean the back of the tray, but it worked great (knock on wood)! I hope both the COM and NAV on your older radio work like a charm.

Well the COM worked great. Seems to work as good as the MX300 in terms of range and clarity. The NAV did not work at all. OBS wouldn't budge and I couldn't pick up any VOR ID's. I need to do a little more investigating on the NAV side but I'm happy to have the COM working. I don't have an immediate need for dual VOR's anyway.

P.S. This thread might need to be moved to technical questions!

You can also call TKM and see if they have a MX 300 for sale. We bought one from them a couple of years ago. If I remember correctly, they gave us a good deal because it was a return and they couldn't sell it as new.
