Reg-

Haven't considered putting my GPS III on the RIGHT yoke. I always hated yoke mounts. For me, I'm adding mine with a ram mount to where the pilot's side "OH $#17" Handle was just above the ASI. I also have an iPod holder coming for the copilot side!

I have the Garmin 396 with the Airgizmo Panel Mount. It is really amazing with the weather and xm music. It Is expensive and the "aviator" weather data will cost you $50/Month. When I flew my plane from Arizona to NY, I was able to animate the Nexrad to see the directions of any storm cells. The Garmin was a good backup to all of my trained resources.

My flight last week with Mike has me rethinking my GPS. Picture this, your cruising down the beach at 1000 msl, with the XM radio on, pulling up the current winds aloft.

Hanger empty for now

And watching for traffic!

How does the 396 interface with your headset for the XM radio?

The 296 allows you to order a "motorcycle" cable that will hardwire for both 12v (or 28v) and audio. I bet a similar feature is available for the 396. Additionally, some cables are available that have the data cables in them so you can actually interface it to your encoder for pressure altitude if my memory is correct. I think I read somewhere that you can even link the data cable to an autopilot, but I may be getting cloudy on this now.

Dan,The back of the 396 has an audio out (Mini Headphone jack). My intercom has an audio input, So I just run a male mini to each. I have the 396 fused and wired to my Cigarette lighter wires. So Its running off ship power during flight, and during preflight I turn It on with Its battery power, to start downloading all of the WX data.

Yeah there Is a One time fee, and you can turn It on and off as you like through a phone call. I get the xm music for 6.99/month since XM came free for 2 years In my Hummer. So I got some sort of family discount on the monthly music charge since I am already a subscriber. I thnk the music Is around 9.99/month..

So it sounds like you could run the 396 into (example) a newer Lightspeed headset with (priority, self-muting) audio interface and you could conveniently, safely, listen to your favorite tunes whenever you want. VERY COOL <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

NYMikeyD...
9.99 a month, IF you are already a subscriber? I have XM in my Silverado so I reckon the $9.99 would work for me.

How much is the radar/weather subscription each month? I guess that is a 12 month contract?

Last question.. (I have the top of the line Lightspeed ANR and this would work really good I assume) but, how in the world do you change XM channels on the 396?

Thanks,
Roy, Central Texas

Roy,

Full weather data is around $59/month; they also offer a subset of the wx data for $25 or so a month. I probably wouldn't subscribe to any wx here in So. AZ, except for the fact that I work for the company that provides the lightning data that XM uses.

The 396 has a separate menu page for the radio. The only downside is if your passenger wants to channel-surf.
You can't display the GPS map and the XM information at the same time...
