Hello all,

My mechanic has a Globe Swift that has been refitted with Cessna 150 seats. He sent them off to be recovered at a local shop and they messed up the seat frames by welding and modifying them incorrectly. (Why in the heck did they welded them, I guess I'll never figure out.) Anyways, I put my mechanic in touch with Shelby from TN Wings (great guy!).

My question is: Are the seat frames different for different models of C150's? It seems every 150 seat my mechanic can get ahold of, the track is too wide. I know that the older 150's had narrower bodies, but did they have narrower seat tracks as well? He's thinking so and is now on the lookout for 1959-ish seats that might fit the bill.

I appreciate any insight on the matter.

Hi Amy,

I can't help you on your seat question but I sure have an internal soft spot for the Swift......I think I recall that you have talked about this plane before.

Good luck to your mechanic.

Indeed I have. smile I can't find a recent picture of it, but it's a beauty! I'm really hoping someone here has the knowledge to solve our little seat problem, because as soon as he gets them covered and installed, I'm going to get a ride!!!! !!! laugh

I was honored to park Sierra next to a Swift several years ago at a Missouri fly-in.

In my youth, my uncle had a polished Swift with blue trim just like this one so parking next to it took me back in time for the day.

Amy,

Have your mechanic contact the Swift Museum Foundation - they are the repository of all things Swift, including information on the mods (Cessna 150 seats are a popular mod for Swifts). http://swiftmuseumfoundation.org/

I've dealt with the folks in the past and they've been incredibly helpful. I've gotten the feeling that they know where every mod and every part is in the country, including stuff hidden under some guy's sofa.

Hope you do get a ride - they are lovely flying airplanes but most definitely not swift if they have stock engines. Very draggy airframes. With big engine mods they are fast. One interesting design quirk/feature is that they are difficult to three-point land due to the sudden drag rise as the landing gear wells are exposed to the relative wind and the loss of effectiveness of the elevator/horizontal stabilizer as it nears the ground. They wheel land beautifully, however.

Warmest regards,
Rick

Amy,
I'm currently having an annual in Jackson TN at Paul New's shop. They have a number of 150 seat frames. I'll check tomorrow to see what vintage. Or have your friend call Paul (Tennessee Aircraft Services , 731 424-7227; tasnew@gmail.com)
