The Chevy loaded on my trailer waiting for the new owner to come pick it up
I went back down to Lorraine's this weekend to help the family move some more cars around and do some cleaning. While I was there, I put her in contact with the buyer for the '29. I also managed to help her sell a '30 Model A pickup parts truck, a '26ish Nash parts car, a 7K lb twin post car lift, and a bunch of other small items. Two more Nash sedans and the TT to go to get rid of the last of the cars.
There was one more sedan that I did not list because Lorraine had asked me not to. It is a '29-30 Ford Model A Tudor sedan that her father had started restoring a long time ago. The body was removed from the frame and everything else connected to the frame was restored. The engine, the frame rails, the rear end, the front end and the wheels have been gone through and painted.
Lorraine's father had started the body work before he was unable to continue. There was a small patch of rust in one wheel well that he had repaired using old school body repair techniques. There is no bondo in his repair!! It looks like the body was just about ready for paint when he stopped working on it.
I had drooled over that sedan when I was in high school. I always thought it was a shame that it was just sitting there and not being finished. It had so much potential for a young guy with money to burn. I had asked for a price to buy it many times but I was always told that it was not for sale. I think they knew that I wanted to turn it into a hot rod.
When I was getting ready to leave this morning, Lorraine called me and asked me to stop over before I left. She told me that she had some goodies to send back with me for my wife and I. Now how can a guy pass up some old school home made treats?!
Once I had my treats in my hands (both hands since she was sending a BUNCH of stuff for Heather and I), Lorraine FLOORED me! She told me that the next time I came down, we were going to load the Model A on my trailer and I was going to take it home with me. I told her that I really did not have the money to buy it from her and she should sell it to someone that had the cash in hand. She said that she was not selling it to me, she was gifting it to me!!! I was one of "her" boys and the rest of the boys had already gotten their gift from the estate.
I tried every way I could think of to refuse, but she was not having any of it. She told me that if it was not for me, none of the cars would have been sold and a lot of the cleaning would have not gotten done. I kept telling her that she was family and that is what family does for each other. Well, that argument didn't work so well. She threw it right back at me and told me that I was family and she was giving me part of the estate.
It actually got a little uncomfortable. I kept refusing the Model A and she kept insisting that I take it. Lorraine got to the point of telling me that if I did not take it, I would not be welcomed at her home anymore. I guess you really should not argue with a 70+ year old woman. They will always win!
We did reach a happy medium, if you can call it that. I kept trying to offer her money for it when I could afford it. She refused. She did tell me that when I reached the first Million dollars in my bank account, than and only than, I could pay her fair market value for the way the sedan sits right now in today’s dollars.
During my 2.5 hour drive home, I did a lot of thinking about my new Model A. I think that since the chassis had already been restored, I will keep it original. There are a ton of NOS and aftermarket parts that come with the sedan. I think it would be a shame to turn it into a hot rod when Lorraine's father had worked so hard to restore it to original.
I was actually toying with the idea of painting it up like a 1930's US Army staff car to match Barfly but have so far come up empty handed in my research. I am not sure if the US Army actually used Ford Model A's as staff cars...... I guess I have more research to do.
One could say that I have too many projects, and they would be correct. My intention is to finish 120BR and Barfly before I start on my Model A. But than again, variety is the spice of life! Maybe if I get burned out working on Barfly, I can tinker on my new Tudor.....
