I like my INS 429. That is a pretty good price for a brand new unit.

At $1625, it's a very inexpensive solution to those wishing to equip their airplane for IFR. The unit is a VOR, LOC, ILS and Display (CDI & Marker beacons) all in one box:

That is exactly why I bought this unit. My plane only had a com radio when I got it. I bought a used INS429 (including a diplexer) for only $200 less than this new price, and after installation got my plane IFR certified. I don't think I could have gotten the plane capable of IFR operation any less expensively. Any other nav radio would have required me to also buy the CDI, which can cost as much as the radio and further prolongs the installation time. I would have bought new, if this price had been available.

Installation was only an hour or two, since the plane already had the cat whisker antenna on the tail and all that was needed was to hook up power, connect the antenna to a diplexer for the VOR and ILS inputs, and connect the audio to the audio panel.

Realistically, I would not fly in heavy IFR weather if all I had was a single nav radio. However, it is useful to legally fly within the IFR system in reasonably good weather. It is also all you need to be able to stay current by tracking and holding, and shooting some approaches once in a while.

Another use for me is that my son would like to get his PPL, so it was best to have at least some basic navigation equipment in the plane, even for VFR flights. I just use my iPad in that situation, but it is best not to get too distracted with that during initial training. I actually had a lot of fun tracking VOR's when I first got the unit installed. VOR's are going to be around for quite a while, even if some stations are decommissioned.

All,

I will be placing the VAl Radio order this week. Not sure if I will make the $5000 threshold or not (for an additional discount), as so far I have only one firm order with several members considering...

The prices I listed in the beginning of this thread are correct for now, so if interested you can order through me (and pay) via PayPal (airplanepanels@gmail.com).

If I get over $5000 in orders (one more radio), I will apply the additional discount.

Cheers,
Bill
