Did you find the loose fasteners in the belly in the landing gear structure? or the extremely worn rudder bar bearing blocks? or the missing rudder cable tension spring?

Charles:
Thanks for this information. They probably have found those things, but if you know of more...please tell me so I can be sure they fix them. I didn't realize that you did a pre-buy on this plane.

Glad I didn't show picks of my Cherokee closer than what I did. I am already depressed at....new starter, stripped bolts in alternator bracket, AH and TC needing overhauled, and yesterday....the Nav/Com started to give up the ghost.

But hey....I got a really good deal (well....maybe upgraded to a "fair" deal as of today, and by the end of the month...maybe I paid a bit much). Seems to be the way of aircraft ownership. Buyers remorse...maybe, but I will press through, keep flying and just manage the repairs.

Another update...will this thread ever end?

I have aged or matured (I don't know which) a lot in the past two weeks since purchasing N45291...the origination of this thread. I went to the maintenance hangar today for the latest on this plane. The AP says he has 66 squawks on her, but many are AD's he has not confirmed. One was bird poop on the windshield.

The ones I recall:

1. RR the right wheel bearing and race. I saw it...confirmed.
2. New rotors and pads L and R. Below minimums.
3. New voltage regulator...done.
4. New/rebuilt vacuum pump.
5. No prop history in logs...they are working on it. It will probably need overhaul...the prop guy comes tomorrow.
6. Teledyne/Continental advisory bulletin says to OH the engine, regardless of time, after 12 years...this is a "recommendation" and I say "nah" as it checks out fine from all of their tests so far.
7. Various screws are incorrect...correct them.
8. Stripper from the paint job still remains in some of the wing ribs. Not a problem, but they recommend spraying the entire guts with anti corrosive. (Is this something I should do?)
9. They did not find loose fasteners in the belly landing gear structure as Chuck suggested. In fact, two AP's rechecked while I was there today. Landing gear is fine and no evidence of hard landings.
10. Right muffler (that provides carb heat) has cracks and has been re-welded too many times...replace it.

That's all I can remember. I will get the entire squawk list on Wednesday (divided betweeen "must" and "mights" and I will post it on my web site for everyone to see.

The next trip for N45291 is to the avionics shop. So, by next week I should have an additional $12,000 invested in a 31 year old Cessna 150.

"Still crazy after all these years."

Thanks for all of the comments both + and -.

Hey Paul....as we walk through this together, I can relate.

8) As for Anti-Corrosion in the wings. Sure doesn't hurt. As long as you do not intend to paint the plane for several years, then I would do it if stripper was still in there. Shouldn't hurt the aluminum, but you never know what it might attract. The Corrosion X (or whatever you use) will weep from rivets for many years making them difficult to paint until that process is done. This is good for corrosion protection, but bad for getting paint to stick. If you paint is as pretty as it seems....do it.

6) Lycoming is the same way (10 years I believe) and some folks are rather anal about this, but I wouldn't do it. I would put it on oil analysis (I recommend Blackstone labs, but the club has some discounts with Phillips I believe) and just watch the indicators. She will tell you when things are starting to go wrong. My Cardinal and 150/150 both had over 20 years on them and spec'd out better than some new overhauls. That said, time is an issue at some point but am not sure 10 or 12 years is. (liability disclaimer...I am not a mechanic).

I am going to OH some instruments and my Mk12D so I will have about $3K after all in repairs and such to my new acquisition. This on a 2600 TTAF, 175 TSMOH 40 year old airplane. The fun, I am sure, is only beginning.

Dang Paul,
I feel for ya, brotha!

Still, my thoughts...for that kind of money you could've had N63363 and it's on your home field in Tallahassee with 2200 hrs. on it, a brand new engine, prop overhaul, and new avionics. Sounds like The Wizard of Oz, huh?

Keep a look-out for cracks in the 3-piece McCauley wheels which are on it too!!

You may want to get some paint on top of the flaps (just above their leading edges) when they're extended before you corrosion treat it. Once it's done there's no going back and paint won't stick.

Thanks Jeff:

I see no reason for the OH on the engine. The oil analysis was done by Shell and came back with nothing. There were no metal fragments in the screen (no oil filter).

With the anti-corrosion stuff, yes they are using Corrosion X and they said it will seep until enternity. That stuff won't harm the paint, correct????

Yes, the fun is only beginning, but I have owned this airplane for over two weeks and have never flown it. JEZ.

Hey...I have a month in mine and all of 3 hours now....1 of which was the flight home. Corrosion X will not hurt the paint as long as it has cured. If there are places that could use paint touch up (especially on the bottom of wings and such) do them first, then let the paint cure for a couple of weeks, then do the corrosion X.

So, you are saying that N63363 is for sale?

Paul,
Just out of curiosity, I called John Shaner about 2 months ago...just fishing and testing the water. I asked him if he'd ever consider selling it and if so, I'd like to be the first one at the top of the list.(This is not usually recommended ) He replied that, "He had given it some thought in the past and yes, he would sell it for 36k." He proceeded to tell me how nice it was and that he'd invested over 42k in it. He then got very long winded and finally gave me his mechanics number and informed me I needed to call him about the particulars on it.

Well, you knew I'd call him too, didn't ya? I did, and the mechanic poked a little fun at him by saying he probably had 50k in it!!! He said, in his opinion, it was probably the most expensive, and most perfect 150 in the world!

The conversation went on and he said Bob was extremely particular about his plane. Said it took him 2 hours to put it to bed each time he flew it because he wouldn't go home until it was spotless, and I mean every bug was off of it.

Just a touch outta my budget.

Just goes to show ya, you may not have to look very far because, sometimes, it's right there in your own backyard. Now, if I could get my grass cut low enough, maybe I could find it in mine!!

A touch out of my budget too. I could do this annual, put in the new radios, and totally pimp out N45291 and still have enough left for a factory new engine for that kind of cash.

By the way, I do spend an extra hour cleaning off the bugs from my airplanes, too.
