Graeme, how was the new Whelan to install? My beacon just quit on me, have not had a chance to see if it's just the bulb since the bulb stays lit all the time of if the flasher assembly is shot.

Took the mechanic less than an hour - including removal of the old parts. That said - all was clean and non-corroded and easily removed.

I have a flasher unit if you are interested..........

Jeffrey,
Here's a few photos of a Whelen LED beacon installation. Keep in mind, I was replacing a Whelen 'flasher beacon' and upgrading to an LED beacon, not replacing the stock Cessna flasher, as I had already done that the previous year and had already removed all of the associated Cessna 'flasher' parts located in the tailcone.

I hope this works...check it out at:

Nobody seems to have the Whelen in stock right now. Spruce shows them available again July 16.

My guess is that the LEDs they used to get their certification are no longer available -- that technology is changing very fast. If I'm right, they're busy getting re-qualified with newer LEDs, and newer units will be brighter, draw less current, have fewer LEDs, or some combination of those.

Graeme did you install a piece of sticky foil on the front to block the light from shining into your cabin? I think someone here mentioned that.

Yes. Small thin strip of aluminum foil.
