This morning I sniped (won in the last seconds) a Horizon P-1000 electronic tach for $199.50 including shipping. The seller was Wentworth...one of the major used aircraft parts dealers. They had a bunch of parts...small to whole airplanes...on there.
I've done quite a bit of business on eBay the last couple of years, both selling and buying. So far, so good. One DOES need to be cautious though. Like has been said: If it looks too good to be true, it is most likely neither good nor true <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

I have been involved as an ebayer (garagesaleinca) for a couple of years as both a buyer and a seller. Very recently I was the highest bidder for a Garmin GA-56 antenna for 49L. Earlier the week I received the following two emails. This may give many of you that are not familiar with ebay a chance to see how they operate to protect us. In this case they were being a bit to cautious. Yes indeed, the item had been pulled from the line up.

I bought two things on e-bay. The first was a copy of an old TV program. Turned out that it was a bootlegged copy, and not a very good copy at that. It gave my DVD player fits.

The other thing was a bayonet for my M1 Garand. This was the genuine article and looks good on the M1.

Yes, you can find the good people, but there are sharks in that thar ocean.

I have bought tons of stuff in the last several years and while there have been a few times that the outcome was not 100 percent perfect, the overall process has saved me thousands. Included in ebay buys was my 2005 GL1800 Goldwing, Adamas and Carvin guitars, Tascam studio equipment, and too numerous items to mention all. The bike alone saved me $2,000 AFTER the cost of airfare and bringing it home from Missouri.

I also have had excellent luck buying and selling on Ebay. I was taken by one scam and eventually did get my money back. It was a fake pilot shop. Unfortunately for her, pilots are smart bunch. After a few weeks of emailing around, we figured out who and where she actually lived. I believe she was arrested.

Anyways, I'll get to the point. If you are a seller, somebody has gone to great lengths to create a web page that looks just like Ebay. They email you (from an ebay.com address) and tell you that you need to go and re enter your account info. If you forward it to spoof@ebay.com , they'll write back in minutes and tell you it is fake. This may be how the scammers hijack people's accounts who have perfect feedback. If someone wants you to not use "ask seller a question", then that is a huge red flag that the account may have hijacked.

I've gotten several of those in the past, usually after bidding on higher priced items. Although it may look legit, it's easy to tell the difference. First, ebay will always use your identification, (not "Dear Ebay member" or some such), and floating your curser over any and all links without clicking on them will display the real link at the bottom of your screen. If it starts with anything other than ...ebay.com/ ... it's not legit. Ebay also sends you a private message that only they can send for you to read once logged in.

Here's a legit link: (place your curser over the link and read the link in your browser at the bottom of this screen.)

Here's one that's fake! (I could redirect you to fit my scammer needs!)

One word of caution:
There were many, many airplanes damaged by hurricane Katrina, and I've noticed a great number of aircraft parts, avionics and such being offered on eBay recently, more than usual. Be wary of sellers from the hurricane reigon,as avionics and such removed from a wind damaged plane would probably be OK, but was it soaked in water and then dried out? Also, I always pay with my credit card for anything over $500, to get the added protection of having my credit card company cancell the charges.Always look at a sellers feedback history, and be wary of "buy-it-now" and perks such as free shipping to make a very quick sale.If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.......

Hurricane Damaged Aircraft

Hurricane Damaged Aircraft
The 2005 Hurricane season was the most significant on record. The records set include total number of named storms (26), total number of major hurricanes hitting the U.S. and total number of category 5 hurricanes*. These storms have caused extensive damage that has a wide range of affects. The Federal Aviation Administration Safety Team (FAASTeam) wants you to be aware that aircraft you operate or may consider purchasing could have been damaged during these weather events.

Aircraft affected by the 2005 hurricane season are currently being sold and purchased around the Nation. It is important that any prospective purchaser or operator of these aircraft be familiar with the aircraft's hurricane damage history when determining if the aircraft is airworthy.

Aircraft damaged during these weather events can be repaired in accordance with applicable regulations. However, airmen should consider the long-term effects to aircraft that have been submerged in water. They may require extensive corrosion control/prevention measures.

A list of applicable guidance material can be found below:
