I've been looking for a GNS 430W to put in my Cardinal and have found one for a reasonable price ($8500, including tray, connectors, antenna, indicator, and documentation) in Beulah, ND. The unit has been checked out by an avionics shop in Bismark and has been yellow tagged. The seller wants me to send him a certified check before he ships it to me (which puts all the risk of the transaction on me). I'd feel better about it if I could find a third party to handle the transaction--someone I could trust that I could send the check to, make the exchange with the seller, and then ship the unit to me. Do any of you have any advice to offer?

If you belong to AOPA you might take a look at their escrow service.

Jon Lindgren and Robert Omlid are from ND.
Maybe one of them can help you out.

Have it sent COD?

Just wondering out loud here.....at 8,500.00, what is the cost of the new Gamin replacement to the 430? For some reason 8,500.00 sounds a little stiff? When they were available new, weren't they around 10,000.00?

I have not looked into this stuff in a while so again, I'm just wondering out loud and this may very well be hovering around market value.

Charlie. Have you considered using paypal? If you pay via paypal and a credit card, I believe you can dispute charges if not happy. Worth looking into anyway. Mike.

I wouldn't use paypal for that purpose. They only protect you if the item was sold on Ebay by a seller (with good feedback) whose transactions they guaranteed. Buying it outside of Ebay, you're on your own and stand a better chance of getting a positive outcome directly from your credit card company without getting Paypal in the middle.

I was thinking the same thing but wasn't going to crap on someone else's deal. I just sold a GPS-400W (same as GNS-430W, without the radio) for $3500 through Barnstormers. The buyer sent me a cashier's check. I sent him the unit.

I refuse to take PayPal for such deals. The buyer can initiate a charge back on the credit card they use to fund their PayPal purchase and the seller has no recourse as PayPal passes it right through. The buyer then has your item and their money back.

Thanks for all the good advice. You've given me some good options to pursue.

Charlie,

I thought the price seemed kind of high too. Did a quick Google search and found this company [nexairavionics.com] offering a GNS430W for about two thousand less.

I know nothing about this company and CANNOT vouch for them but their price might help as a data point.
