Really? That's funny to see $1500.00, the Eighty Eight Charlies were told $8K, and I heard that from more than one source. The engine is a moot point, not for sale, they've earmarked it for another project. The plane has been painted, they were ready to put it back together but the STC was the problem. I do not have all the details, I wanted to get some kind of handle on ballpark value/price, if it was at all worth it to find out further. This group does this kind of work, so I could get everything I wanted done reasonably, I figure, otherwise they're stuck with a unsellable pile of aluminum anyway. From what I can tell looking at it, seems to need dust removal and minor TLC besides a power plant. I don't understand how a complete airplane would be cheaper to mod, if you have one already in pieces ready to work on?
I don't think they would have purchased something without a paper trail, couldn't re-sell it could they?

Keith,
$1500.00 will get you STC paperwork, drawings, a nosebowl and a gross weight increase. That's it. You scrounge for the rest of it.

8-9k will get you the following, same supplier, same pieces, just a few more pieces and cubic dollars. Same as you were quoted:

As per David Roland's conversion process he went thru a few years ago, here's his accounting of what he received when I posed the question:

Paperwork and a big box of parts.

All the drawings for 2 STCs, one for the 150HP conversion and one for the Sensenich propeller and a different muffler. The conversion now uses a more conventional round muffler.

Most all of the parts needed for the conversion minus the engine, engine related accessories, and propeller.

Things like:

engine mount
spinner
battery box shelf to relocate the battery behind the baggage compartment.
circuit breakers
fuel pressure gauge
electric fuel pump
switch for electric fuel pump
battery cables
wire
scat tubing
baffles
carburetor air box and filter
fiberglass nose bowl
oil cooler
I think there were some oil lines and fuel lines included as well as some miscellaneous hardware.

I can't remember what all. It's most everything you should need. But then, no two planes are alike and tearing into a 40+ year old plane is only going to turn up some additional things that need to be changed or corrected. Harry put together the kit based upon my plane's serial number. Some stuff was added and other stuff left out of my kit because of my answers to Harry's questions regarding my plane. We got everything we should have in the end.

A lot of the parts have to be custom made for the STC. Del-Air manufactured the engine mount, spinner and most of the sheet metal parts. The parts were all of good quality.

You've already got the engine mount for an 0-235, so it's the same mount for an 0-320. Now, you'llhave to start searching thru the junkyards, saving money, but not time.

Keith,

The cost of the STC, nose bowl, and gross weigh increase are $1500. The other items you will require to install the STC will be more. Best to call Harry Dellicker for the complete story. (give yourself lots of time for Harry likes to chat!)

Bengie,
I had no plan on a O-320 thing, I had entertained the O-235 Sparrowhawk mod, and someone told me the Lycoming O-290 out of a PA-12 was the ultimate engine, although not supported by Lycoming, there has to be parts out there. Like I said, just want to know what would be a ballpark value.....

0-290? Ultimate engine?
They're no longer supported by Lycoming and the airboat guys don't even use them, anymore. That may tell you something....

Sparrowhawk conversion may run between 5-9k on your 0-235 engine.

Good luck with your choice.

I was discussing the O-290 with our I/A a few years back. At that time there were parts available only from salvage. Though still could be found, They were starting to get pretty rare. What are present O-290 owners doing? Hoping these parts don't break! frown

Military surplus O-290 powered ground power units (GPU). My neighbor has one. Van's Air Force and other sites have directions for converting them to homebuilt aircraft use. Many of the parts are identical to the "certified" engines found in certain production aircraft, and I believe the FAR's do have provisions for using these parts when normal replacement sources are exhausted.

It wouldn't matter where the parts actually come from, Carl. All you would have to do is match part numbers. If the part numbers match. And the mechanic deems the part serviceable. You should be good to go.

Hi Keith,
I bought two (2) 152 basket case in the past three years. The first one was complete, only missing very little parts (two limit switch for flaps motor and the landing gear fairings) and I pai 13k$ in 2009. I restored this 152 with the help of an A&P friend and the finish cost was 39.5k$. Plane sold for 43k$ in may 2012 (new paint-engine-prop-interior).

The second one was flipped over in high wind and served as an organ donor. I paid 5900$ for it (in december 2011). Engine was good and sold for 7400$ with carb and accessories, prop was 73 hours old (sensenich 72CKS) still in my garage undamaged, engine mount sold for 800$ and the 406 Artex ELT was transfered to my 150/150.

So it greatly vary depending on the overall condition. In your case, considering the airplane need to be put back together, plus an engine and hardware, I would not pay more than 6-8k$ (and I would pay that much, only because the aircraft is complete with new paint, ready to assemble - otherwise stay away).

Good luck

-Fred
