Really? Selling N numbers? When my company wanted the one we're using now, we paid to have the new numbers painted on the guy's plane. I guess that's spending money to get what you want. But, to actively try to sell something that's not yours to begin with?

Guess it takes all kinds.

Never having dealt with N numbers ... Is it like registering a domain name for a web site? Lots of people invest in domains with the hope of making a buck. Seems N numbers would sure be a niche market with little demand.

It cost this guy $10 for each N-number that he reserved.

(Hey Poobs! Where's that $300 you owe me for Triple Niner Echo Delta!) grin

There are quite a few "squatters" who reserve N-numbers ending with "RV" hoping to sell them later to the builders. It does cost $10/year for each number reserved.

I had reserved two numbers when I was planning on building either an RV-12 or an S-19, but my plan changed so I have relinquished them.

I'll hijack this post....
Perhaps he picked them up when registrations expired as people forgot to re-register under the new rules. "Aircraft with registrations that were issued in March, April, May, June, July, or August of any year have already had their old registrations expire. The cost for the re-registration is just $5.00." The 99s are encouraging people to check their registration date as part of ARROW. (Once we get to Dec. 31, 2013, all “old” registration certificates will have expired and the one in your aircraft *must* have an expiration date.)
We have to pay a NAV Canada fee once a year in Canada...I guess that amounts to about the same but yours is much cheaper.

Upon expiration of registration the owner of an unregistered aircraft will be sent notice of the scheduled cancellation of the N-number and their option to reserve the N-number. Once canceled, the N-number will not be available for assignment or reservation for the next five years.

The article was not talking about loosing the registration number...that was my jest! It was mainly stating that the registrations would expire and one should check them.

It is 140$ per year to reserve a Canadian mark. I got C-FRED when someone forgot to pay (was 31 day late) after holding it for 7 years (7 years x 140$/year).When I bought N6667G and imported it in 2007 I needed canadian mark. It is free to get computer selected mark, but who knows what you will get ??? I'd Rather pay 140$ and get C-FRED on my plane than computer choosen C-GFAG, or C-GGAY crazy
