Ive found several good threads in regards to insurance and it seems most here are able to keep it well under $1k per year.

But I haven't seen any posts about commercial use. Mine would simply be aerial photography out of a C-150, and not cargo or passengers for hire. Might have a friend or family member tagging along for fun.

Anyone with ideas of what range commercial rates might be? $3k, $5k .... More?

I haven't checked lately, but a couple of years ago, I was quoted about $4600/yr for a Citabria 7ECA (about $30,000 hull value).

I have commercial insurance for my aerobatic school. I use Forest Agency (Mindy Bass) and couldn't be more thrilled with them. If you call 'em, tell 'em I sent you! laugh

And I couldn't give you an idea as I teach in mine but I did get a better deal because I agreed to be in the plane at all times. That would be similar to your situation. So I'll bet you could get a decent rate.

Thanks for the info. For me, since I'm not instructing or renting out or hauling people for hire, surely it might be cheaper. Just aerial photography. I'll contact Mindy.

This was discussed a while back and somebody provided some FAA documents/rulings that you don't need a commercial rating to sell aerial photographs. I don't know if the insurance company's view is same as that of the FAA.

If a contractor says yes to me shooting monthly progress photos of a new development that will take three years ... then I have been hired to do something where "the flight is a required part of the business transaction". This is how the FAA has interpreted it recently.

When I'm flying in Class C a couple times a month, talking with the same folks on Approach Control, shooting the same areas every month .... its on record and very obvious. LOL

Attached is some interesting reading for those interested. Notice that it is not from a FSDO ofice where opinions can vary at times ... but supersedes them all ... being from the FAA's Office of the Chief Counsel.

If I transfer ownership of my bird to a "Corporation" but i'm the only one flying it, do I have to get commercial insurance? What about if I transfer it to the name of my personal business?

Insurance is about how an airplane is used ... and pilot qualifications .... not so much who owns it. But ask an agent.
