Carl -

Make that read as follows:

"...the best interior man in the business may well be IS Mr. Shelby W. Isham of TN Wings, and a club member, too!

He is the best. Anywhere.

ALWAYS have an IA do your prebuy and tell him your hiring him to talk you out of the deal. I am an A&P and have nowhere near the knowledge of a good GA IA. Either you'll pay now or pay dearly later!

I can say Yea or Nay to this. If you and/or your own personal mechanic does the prebuy. Then a great big Yea!

If you are just hiring a mechanic "off of the street" and expect them to do a good prebuy for you? Especially long distance? Be prepared for the worst when your first annual comes due! cry

Everything checked out on Mary Lou on my pre-buy. She came out of North Carolina... no major issues. grin

First annual compressions went from the 70's to 13 in one cylinder. eek frown A complete $5500 top overhaul later at her first annual in my care things were good. mad

Hey... i was new, it was my first time buying a bird and I knew NOTHING about the existence of the Club. I figured if they were an A & P/IA, things would be straight up and square.

I think it becomes difficult for us noobie pilots that are in the market for a bird to find a "personal A&P" as most of us don't have one yet. I know that the primary Volkswagen forum (tdiclub.com) has a specific list of "VW Guru's" who are the de facto experts on the VW TDI engines. Its my understanding that it is a list of bulletproof mechanics are the 100% business with no bull. It would be nice to have something similar -- maybe our own private list here with a review section for each.
