After about a half dozen prototypes I think I've finally perfected my strut mount design. I'm kicking the idea around of selling these so thought I'd offer a couple up to members of the club to test out. I made a few jigs so I could consistently repeat the bends and bought enough materials to make 10 mounts. I figure I'll gauge the interest and decide if it's worth going further.
The mount is made of 1" aluminum and simply fits around the wing strut. It can be installed on either wing. There are camera mounts on both the front and back to allow for 1 or 2 cameras that can each be rotated 360° individually. The video and pictures show GoPro cameras attached but you could attach any camera with a standard tripod receiver within reason (SLRs are probably too heavy). The front closes with a wing-nut so it meets the "no tools required" rule and can be attached or removed in about 10 seconds. A screwdriver and wrench are required in order to adjust the level to the horizon but should only need to be adjusted once.
I'll have the first few production units completed by Thursday and thought I'd offer a couple to members for $75 plus actual shipping. I'm thinking that if I go further I'll probably shoot for $100 which is still cheaper than AeroVideo's similar product at $119-129.
Please give me your thoughts even if you're not interested in buying one. PM if you are interested.
The pictures show wingnuts on the front and back but the final version will have a nylon lock nut on the back since you only need to take one nut off to install and remove it. The GoPro tripod mounts are not included but could be for $16 extra (actual cost). [Linked Image] Pic 1 [i1091.photobucket.com]
As for the legalities...I've asked nearly every pilot or mechanic I know (including on this forum) and even sent an email to the AOPA and the overwhelming consensus is that if it's temporary (can be attached or removed without tools) it's ok. Having said that, I'm not making any guarantees. By using this mount you assume your own risk.
