Hi Henry.
The performance of the tips were excellent. I just don't care for how they look on the plane. I think it looks sportier with the stock tips on. Here is a picture with the new tips.

I gotta tell ya Dom, That's one pretty bird for sure.

Gotta love the H-model

I'm with you though, I like the stock tips better.

I'm not sure if your pants are original?, mine are a different style. see pic.

Very nice plane. I agree with you regarding the looks with the Madras tips.

Hi all.
I have these tips with me at Oshkosh and will let them go for a very good price. Send me a message if you are interested. If I don't answer right away its because I am at the show.

Dom, did you ever compare the performance parameters between the two types of tips? You could shed some light of the differences for the rest of us. I still have my Madras tips on, and think they do help with a few things such as greater angle of climb, useful for me in short grass fields. My stall speeds at full power read 0, no doubt the pitot angle affects this. The airspeed indicator does seem accurate or at least normal in all the speed ranges. Top speeds have been debated. Landing stall speeds I would think are a bit lower, but I don't know if it's enough to notice or matter.

I'll grant you the visibility to the side will be a big improvement. Your tips look very nice. Mine are white as is the rest of my wing making them look a little less pronounced.

Hi Jim.
I have not actually noticed much if any difference after removing the Madras. I have not done any actual comparisons just seat of the pants. Some folks swear by them however.

Jim,

I've looked for hard data on the Madras tips for years and never found it. As winglets became mainstream (well after Madras tips came out back in the '60s or early '70s) there have been comments that Madras did their design just exactly upside down, but, again, I've never seen any data on how winglets would affect performance of a 150/152.

While in curious mode, it would be interesting to see a comparison of stall speeds with VGs versus Madras tips, taking into consideration weight of the conversions. I can't help but think that the VGs would win that one - but, that's purely opinion not backed by a lot of fact.

Best regards,
Rick

A few years back, Royson did an article in the newsletter comparing the Madras, Hoerner and stock wingtips. The Hoerners came out on top when compared with stall speed, stall characteristics and overall performance.

Check out the March/April and May/June 2002 newsletters.
