I don't think it is quite that Charles. My Cardinal (insured value $56,000) was $1100 per year on a 400 hour pilot. My 150/150 was $700 per year on insured value of $27500. The primary difference seemed to be in the value and even then it wasn't twice as much.

I think a standard 150 is more in the range of $500 to $600 from a discussion I recall several months ago. In any case, its something to look at. Double the seats and you double the liability exposure, double the hull value and you double the cost to total the aircraft in an accident. Insurance companies do look closely at this in addition to the safety record of the aircraft being insured. (which may explain why a Maule is so high)

Mont,

No behind the scenes dealing at all: everything was honest and up front. I must say Mont that you have provided a wealth of info without holding back anything and that is the kind of seller I want to deal with! And don't rush until you are at a deal you are confortable with.

As for insurance, here are quotes I got:

1. 1963 172, value $38,000, premium $1033

2. 1961 Beech 35-A33 Debonair, value $60,000, premium $2112

What a difference between the planes!, but I think the costs of operating a Beech Debonair would be double a 172.

1980 152, value $28,000, Premium $630

I guess the 172 insurance is higher.

Steve:

Thanks for the kind words. For me, the reluctance to sell has had very little to do with $$$$. It's amazing how attached we become to our planes. Until I find a suitable replacement, I just don't feel comfortable letting 16GOLf go. Frankly, if someone were to offer me $1,000 more than my asking price, at this point , I still wouldn't let her go.

I'm a low time pilot- just 200 hours as PIC- and to sell my plane and risk becomming "rusty" as my first BFR looms on the not so distant horizon (Oct. '06) just doesn't make a lot of sense.

It's almost laughable; I'm just an "Average Joe" and I never thought I'd face a day when I would voluntarily turn down a full price offer on my plane. To be sure, it's not like I'm rolling in doe...

I'm paying about $1100 for $27k hull and $1M liability for my 150M, tailwheel, and of course my age.

To sell or not to sell? You could always donate it to a flying poor boy in north central Wisconsin. I promise you could visit it any time you want!!

I agree. You have a special relationship with your plane, so why cheapen it by bringing money into the picture? You should give it away, to a caring yet financially disadvantaged pilot, so that the hole left in your heart by 16G's absence will be filled with the joy of a good deed.

Although, may I just point out that the weather is much better for a plane in Tennessee than in Wisconsin.

Tim and Jeff:

If the two of you were women, at the next Clinton fly-in, our club could host its first annual mud wrestling competition with 16GOLF going to the winner!

Not so fast there, Mont!

That might just warrant some further consideration!
